about

In April 2016, Francis Girola founded the label Major Arcana Records
to launch Sonic Winter’s second album “Party War On The Killing
Floor”. Involving another twenty-seven guest musicians, this new
opus further pushed the boundaries of musical heterogeneity.
Kicking off with a slab of chunky riffing rock, the hour-long set also
crossed the bridges of psych pop, 1960’s rock ‘n’ roll, acoustic and
experimental music. The very last instrumental piece even
featured an entire classical ensemble from Georgia. In addition to
this progression of sound, the album also adopted a much more
political stance with carefully crafted lyrics depicting the chaos of
the modern world. This serves to show that the band is in constant
evolution.

Here is Mike Ainscoe review in the UK rock magazine PowerPlay.

8/10 Powerpoints.

"This is an interesting one: The second album from Sonic Winter the Scottish based French duo of Jean-Marc Millière and Francis Girola, comprising an hour of music across fourteen songs involving another
27 guest musicians and one which is based around the concept of the chaos of the world we live in today.

Ticking the first of many boxes, "Year Zero" kicks off a musically diverse set with a slab of chunky riffing rock, setting up a trend towards a series of short sharp bursts that cross the bridges of psych pop on "Straight In Your Face", an acoustic stroll through the "Dead Brain Century Carnival" and into a female vocal invoking all manner of psychedelic waves in "Beautiful Queen Of The Golden East" and "Saturday On Earth". Ghosts of past rock'n'roll visit in "Sahara", which invokes a brass tinged sixties vibe and the Ian Hunter/Mott rock and roll feel of "Rocking Machine". However, "Party War On The Killing Floor" is as its most effective and engaging when the music moves into the more experimental areas, the raw distorted guitars giving a darker feel with the quirkiness coming to a head in the final climax in the ten minute "Establishment Of Time"- a cinematic piece which passes from almost operatic and string laden to extended, dense, doom guitar workouts.
Yes, an interesting one indeed. Mike Ainscoe / PowerPlay
